Pastor's Note

Have you ever wondered why the first part of our worship service varies so much throughout the Church Year?  The long version with a Hymn, Kyrie and Hymn of Praise before the Prayer of the Day was originally adopted to cover the long and elaborate processions of the Pope and Cardinals in Rome.  (Otherwise the prayer would come before the clergy got into places.)  Fortunately, the reforms of the liturgy have tied the first part of the service into honoring Jesus Christ, instead of the Pope. Accordingly on the major festivals (Christmas, Epiphany, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost and Christ the King) we use all those components.  We use some of them on lesser festivals and a very simple arrangement in the 'ordinary time' we are now in.  This allows the service to vary (and keep us awake noting the changes) and allows an emphasis on the major celebrations.  At LOTV we also change the musical settings of the liturgies to note the changes in major festival seasons.

This is also a good pattern for all our spiritual endeavors.  We need some variety and change to keep our practices (Bible study, prayer, meditations, etc.) from getting stale and enough continuity to not be completely foreign and confusing to us.  What has your experience been like?  Does this variety within a pattern help?
