Granby has come a long way from
its roots as a logging and railroad community, to the cow town down
the valley from Winter Park, to the perfect vacation destination for
you and your family. Founded in 1905,
the sleepy mountain town of Granby, Colorado has seen unprecedented
growth over the last 5 years, and is quickly becoming known as the
"in" destination for vacationers for its friendly atmosphere, great
location and climate, and close proximity to Denver. At an elevation
of 7,935 ft. above sea level, Granby, Colorado offers the Colorado
Rocky Mountain experience at a considerably lower price than your
typical resort community. Granby, Colorado has maintained it's proud
ranching heritage and its friendly small-town atmosphere, despite
seeing the growth of the Colorado tourist industry all around it.
You can only keep such a beautiful place a secret for so long. (Back to top) Grand
Lake, established in 1881, has been welcoming visitors to
and from Rocky Mountain National Park since the park opened in 1915.
You can spend part of your day enjoying the wilderness and then come
into Grand Lake for lunch, dinner, shopping, nighttime activities
and lodging. Trail Ridge Road, which is typically open from late-May
to mid-October, reaches 12,183 feet at its highest elevation.
Connecting Grand Lake to Estes Park, Trail Ridge Road is one of the
most scenic drives in the country. On the journey through Rocky
Mountain National Park, you're apt to see views of breathtaking
Colorado mountain vistas, as well as up-close glimpses of wildlife,
birds, waterfalls and wildlife. At the edge of Rocky Mountain
National Park, Grand Lake is the deepest natural lake in Colorado,
dipping to 265 feet. Fed by high mountain runoff, the lake is clear
and pristine. In the summer, you can rent a boat, bring your own or
simply enjoy the gentle lapping of the waves from the sandy shore.
Grand Lake connects with Shadow Mountain Lake via a canal, and just
down the road is Lake Granby, the second largest body of water in
Colorado. No wonder so many water-enthusiasts make Grand Lake a part
of their Colorado mountain vacation or their favorite weekend
getaway! Inside Rocky Mountain National Park, there's even more
water - 150 lakes and 476 miles of creeks and streams, including the
headwaters of the Colorado River. In the winter, the frozen water in
and around Grand Lake becomes part of the white wonderland, adding
to the beauty of this Colorado vacation oasis.(Back to top) Hot Sulphur
Springs
is the county seat of Grand County,
This town is at an elevation of 7,680 feet (2341 m). It was
originally a summer campground for Indians
who came for the hot springs. When Grand
County was formed, it was the first county seat from 1874 to 1882,
after which it moved to Grand Lake. The
county seat returned in 1888 and has been here ever since. This town
was established in 1860 making it the oldest town in the county and
originally named Saratoga West and sometimes called Warm Springs. In
1863 the name was changed to reflect the Hot Springs Resort in
the area that were used for medicinal purposes. The town site was
bought by William
Newton Byers, founder of the Rocky Mountain News,
in 1864. He wished to make it a spa and resort so surveyed, platted
and named the streets to the city. It was incorporated April 1,
1903. (Back to top) Kremmling is
located approximately at the mouth of the both the Blue River, which descends from the south, and
Muddy Creek, which descends from the north. This location
provides valley access to Dillon and to Rabbit Ears Pass at the Continental Divide, which then descends into Steamboat Springs.Kremmling is also where the Blue River and
Muddy Creek join the headwaters of the Colorado River, which comes
in from the East and then passes West through Gore Canyon. This
confluence is the primary reason Kremmling was founded. After the
Moffat railroad, the Denver, Northwestern & Pacific, arrived in
July 1906, Kremmling became the county's central shipping point. It
was incorporated May 14, 1904. In the 20th century, ranching became
